Dr. Eddy Souffrant, associate professor of Philosophy, will present on The Problem of Chronic Need: the moral challenges that human-made or natural disasters/crises create. Dr. Souffrant attempts to carve out the geographies of a moral theory that would justify our responses to the chronic needs of peoples whether local or global. This presentation is part of the discussion series presented by the honor society for international scholars, Phi Beta Delta.

Tournées Film Festival

The Tournées Festival highlights films representative of contemporary French cinema that span generational and geographic borders, offer a range of genres and subjects, and showcase innovations in both style and storytelling. Now in its 16th year, The Tournées Festival has partnered with more than 350 universities. Support for the 2012 Tournées Festival is provided by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Centre National de la Cinématographie, the Florence Gould Foundation, the Grand Marnier Foundation, Highbrow Entertainment, UNC Charlotte and Pfeiffer University. In addition to the film festival, Atkins Library is sponsoring the Tourneés Film Festival Student Essay Contest with a $250 prize for the winning entry. Histories and Futures of Faith-Based Development:
Medical Missionaries, Competition, and Conflict in Nigeria
With Dr. Shobana Shankar, Georgetown University

This event is co-sponsored by the African Studies Academy, the Department of History, the Department of Anthropology, and the Office of International Programs.
Shobana Shankar is an historian of Africa whose research focuses on missionaries, colonialism, religious conflict, and the history of medicine in Nigeria and West Africa more broadly. Her book manuscript, “Experimenting with Islam: Christian Medical Missions and the Race for Bodies and Souls in British Northern Nigeria,” is under review. She has co-edited with Afe Adogame a volume of essays entitled “Religions on the Move: New Dynamics of Religious Expansion in a Globalizing World,” which explores reverse missions of Asians and Africans evangelizing the West and within the developing world (forthcoming, Brill). She has also published in The Journal of African History and has a forthcoming article in American Music (2012) on black women prisoners and blues recording at Parchman Penitentiary in Mississippi during Jim Crow era. Her next book project will focus on Indian-Nigerian engagement in the context of colonial and postcolonial Islamic evangelism and scientific development. She has received grants from Fulbright, Wenner-Gren, Mellon Foundation, and American Historical Association for her work. In addition to her academic experience, she has worked as a researcher and writer for UNICEF. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at Georgetown University.

Counter-terrorism, Shabaab, and Famine Response in Somalia
With Dr. Ken Menkhaus, Davidson College

This event is co-sponsored by the African Studies Academy and the Office of International Programs.
Dr. Ken Menkhaus is professor of Political Science at Davidson College, where he has taught since 1991. He received his Ph.D. in International Studies in 1989 from the University of South Carolina, where he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for dissertation research on southern Somalia. His subsequent specialization on the Horn of Africa has focused primarily on development, conflict analysis, peace operations, state failure, state-building, and political Islam, involving both academic research and policy work. He taught for two years at the American University in Cairo Egypt from 1989 to 1991. In 1993-94, he served as special political advisor in the UN Operation in Somalia, was a visiting civilian professor at the US Army Peacekeeping Institute in 1994-95, and was awarded a visiting scholar position at the US Army Strategic Studies Institute in 2011-12. In 2004 he was awarded a US Institute of Peace grant for research on armed conflict in the Horn of Africa. He regularly serves as a consultant for the UN, US government, non-governmental organizations, and policy research institutes, and has provided expert testimony on five occasions before Congressional subcommittees. Menkhaus is author of over fifty articles, book chapters, and monographs, including Somalia: State Collapse and the Threat of Terrorism (2004), "Governance without Government in Somalia" in International Security (2007), and "State Fragility as Wicked Problem" in PRISM (2010). He has been interviewed on BBC, CNN, FOX, Al Jazeera, NPR's All Things Considered, the Voice of America, the Diane Rehm Show, MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews, and other media. Menkhaus also has a professional and teaching interest in philanthropy and the non-profit sector, and developed a course and grant-giving exercise on that topic which is supported by a $100,000 grant from Ms. Doris Buffet's "Learning by Giving" foundation

Presented in conjunction with the Department of Social Work, the College of Health and Human Services and the Office of International Programs
During the 2012 spring break study abroad program to Malawi, Africa, UNC Charlotte students from the Department of Social Work visited HEEED, an NGO located on the shores of Lake Malawi.  The students were inspired by the organization’s work with HIV orphans, bilharzia eradication (a parasite present in snails that increases the risk of HIV transmission), HIV education, and a handmade paper operation to fund their outreach efforts in the community. In an on-going collaboration with the College of Health and Human Services, Dr. Ken McKaye of HEEED will be discuss  their work. The campus community is welcome to the presentation and/or reception.
