Completing three years of successful growth, a partnership between the UNC Charlotte Women’s Chorus and Tohoku University (Japan) exemplifies the power of singing together to create community and the effectiveness of curriculum internationalization as a means for student global awareness and citizenship. Begun as a virtual residency in 2021, this collaboration has expanded into a hybrid Globally Networked
Learning module with an embedded two-week on campus residency. Ginger Wyrick, Director of The Charlotteans Women’s Chorus, discusses how music bridges cultural and geographical divides through the development of global connections and expanded worldviews within a traditional music ensemble.
Ms. Wyrick is the author, composer and editor of several products from Abingdon Press: including Church Music for Children; Church Choir 101, The Choir Member’s Companion; Joseph: What a Life (session plan writer); and 52 Arrival Activities for Children’s Choir. She lectures on music education, adjudicates competitions, conducts honor choirs and festivals, and performs internationally. She holds leadership positions in several professional organizations and is the former president of the NC chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. She received the Lara Hoggard Award for distinguished service in Choral Music. At UNC Charlotte, she conducts the Women’s Chorus: The Charlotteans, teaches music theory and class piano.
